The Ministry of Economic Affairs stressed today that the government's goal of building a nuclear-free homeland remains unchanged. The MOEA says the policy is based on Article 23 of the Basic Environment Act, adding that the government is striving to develop more green energy.

The statement comes after incoming economics minister Kuo Ji-hui reportedly told lawmakers that nuclear energy is clean and that decisions regarding nuclear power should be made with the consent of the majority. Kuo made the comments when he paid visits to multiple lawmakers across the political spectrum in recent days.

But the MOEA says there is an urgent need to initially reach the RE30, which means renewable energy should take some 30% of Taiwan's energy consumption, in 2030. Currently the percentage stands at less than 10%.

On the issue of extending the life of existing nuclear power plants the ministry says the decommissioning for nuclear power plants are regulated by law and until changes are made to the law it will follow the schedules.
