Two more national universities are poised to shorten their semesters to 16 weeks per semester from the current 18 weeks.

Tsing-hua (清華) University and Yang-ming Chiao-Tung University have both decided that new schedules should start for the 2024 fall semester.

They say the change is meant to align with international practices and give students more time to pursue their own interests and explore career possibilities. However, some departments have voiced opposition to the decision, saying they've already found 18 weeks too short to cover the materials they intend to teach, and now it's even more crammed.

Four other universities, including National Taiwan University and National Taiwan Normal University, have switched to the 16-week curriculum since September 2022.
