The Mainland Affairs Council has added the Confucius Institutes to a list of Chinese political, governmental and military bodies at which ROC nationals are banned from working.

The move follows revisions to an act that prohibits Taiwanese from working for any Chinese organisation which is involved in matters relating to national identity and loyalty, united front work, or which threatens national security.

Also on that blacklist: the Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits, the All-China Youth Federation and the All-China Federation of Taiwanese Compatriots.

The Confucius Institutes are suspected of being tools for political influence. ROC nationals that work for banned organisations can be fined between a hundred to five hundred thousand NT dollars.
