The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that Vice President-elect Hsiao Bi-khim visited the European Parliament at the invitation of lawmakers there last week.

The statement comes amid Hsiao's low-key visit to the US and Europe. The foreign ministry says Hsiao was welcomed by European Parliament President Roberta Metsola and European Parliament First Vice President Othmar Karas. The visit makes Hsiao the first vice president-elect of Taiwan to have visited the European Parliament.

Hsiao visited Lithuania, where she held closed-door meetings with two of the country's presidential candidates. She also held talks with Czech Senate Speaker Milos Vystrcil in Prague and spoke at a think tanks in Poland.

The foreign ministry says Hsiao's trip was aimed at strengthening ties between Taiwan and European countries as well as helping the European Parliament to better understand the situation in the Taiwan Strait.
