The Examination Yuan and the cabinet have both approved proposals to raise monthly pension payments for retired civil servants, military personnel, and public school teachers by 4%, retroactively from 1 January.

The government is obliged to review and raise the pension payments – as accumulated CPI growth, since a 2% pension adjustment was announced in July of 2022, reached 5.51% at the end of last year.

The raise is based on the Law on the Retirement Pension of Civil Servants, which stipulates that pension payments must be reviewed and adjusted either every four years or when accumulated consumer price index growth reaches 5%.

A review committee set up by the Ministry of National Defense, Ministry of Civil Service, and Ministry of Education met in late January to review pension payment increases in the public sector. The proposals were then presented concurrently to the Examination Yuan and the cabinet prior to being approved.
