Taipower expected to raise residential electricity rates
Taipower has announced that it will be recommending that residential electricity rates are raised for the first time in 20 years when the Electricity Price Review Committee meets later this month to discuss possible price adjustments.
According to Taipower spokesperson Tsai Zhi-meng, households that use up to 330 kilowatt hours a month can expect to see their rates rise in April. The residential electricity rate for monthly consumption under 330 kilowatt hours has not been changed since 2004.
The Ministry of Economic Affairs' review committee consists of representatives from government agencies as well as industrial and commercial groups, and academics. Under the Electricity Act, rates have to be reviewed twice a year by the committee and the adjusted price is introduced in April and October.
The head of the National Association of Industry and Commerce earlier this week said its members fully understand the need to raise electricity rates.
