Taiwan weather forecasting to improve with AI
The Central Weather Administration is boosting its weather forecasting capabilities by integrating AI technology with the deployment of a 6th generation high-speed computing computer.
This new approach aims to enhance forecast accuracy and timeliness, extending typhoon predictions from 7 to 10 days in advance.
The cutting-edge Fujitsu FX 1000 model, powered by TSMC's 7-nanometer ARM chips, ranks 69th globally in computing power, equivalent to around 66,000 home computers.
CWA Administrator Cheng Jia-ping (程家平) highlighted the necessity of improved resolution, from 3 kilometres to potentially 1 kilometre, to tackle Taiwan's complex terrain and weather patterns. By harnessing historical data and AI, Taiwan will be able to develop high-resolution regional weather models.
