The US House Select Committee on Strategic Competition between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party is demanding that Elon Musk provide access to its Starshield satellite communication network in and around Taiwan.

The call came in a letter after it was reported that Musk's SpaceX company could have violated its contract with the Pentagon by not providing access to Starshield.

The letter says "Taiwan and American servicemembers in the Western Pacific would be put at severe risk in the event of Chinese military aggression and robust communication networks are paramount for safeguarding US interests in the Indo-Pacific region."

It requests that Musk provide the House committee with a briefing on its Taiwan operations by 8 March.

Committee chair Mike Gallagher led a cross-party congressional delegation to Taiwan last week. Gallagher and the delegation held talks with senior government officials including President Tsai Ing-wen and President-Elect Lai Ching-te during that visit.
