The Kuomintang (KMT) and Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) legislative speaker candidates have met separately with Taiwan People's Party (TPP) legislators-elect as they seek backing to win the ballot.

The newly elected Legislative Yuan will be inaugurated this Thursday and its first task will be to elect a speaker and deputy speaker.

Legislator-elect Han Kuo-yu and former KMT Chairman Johnny Chiang will be representing the KMT. Incumbent Legislative Speaker You Si-kun and his deputy Tsai Chi-chang will be seeking re-election to the posts of speaker and deputy speaker.

Both pairs held separate closed door meetings with TPP legislators-elect Huang Kuo-chang, Huang Shan-shan and Chen Zhao-zi.

Taking to social media following the KMT candidates' meeting, Han said he and Chiang felt welcomed by the TPP caucus and the two parties exchanged ideas on reforming the lawmaking body while You also took to social media following the DPP's meeting, saying he personally endorsed four of the five plans to reform the legislature proposed by the TPP.

The TPP is describing the meetings with the speaker candidates as "harmonious" and is also stressing that no deals were made behind closed doors.
