The Travel Agent Association is slamming EVA Airways pilots for voting to take strike action during the Lunar New Year holiday period.

Criticism of the move comes after the Taoyuan Union of Pilots announced on Monday that 900 of its EVA Airways members voted to go on strike amid an ongoing pay dispute with the carrier.

The union has said exact strike procedures and other details will be discussed during its regular board meeting tomorrow and that passengers will be given 24-hours’ notice prior to its members walking off the job.

However, the Travel Agent Association says the union needs to give the public at least one month's notice before striking.

Association Chairman Xiao Bo-ren says the Lunar New Year is peak time for overseas travel and those taking group tours to North America or Europe booked their tours at least two months ago and Hsiao says those slated to head overseas during the holiday will be unable to secure refunds if there's a pilot strike, while the association's members could see daily losses of over NT$110,000 for every group tour if the strike takes place.
