The Water Resources Agency says industrial users that consume over 20,000 cubic meters of water per day must obtain at least half their supply from reclaimed sources from 1 February.

The move comes after the government amended the Reclaimed Water Resources Development Act in May of 2022 to cover heavy industrial users even though they are not located in areas with water scarcity.

The agency introduced a subordinate law in August of last year to set the standards for the use of treated water "reclaimed" from sewage or industrial wastewater.

Agency deputy director-general Wang Yi-feng says a grace period of six months has been offered since then and companies that fail to comply with the new regulations by 1 February will face "development restrictions."

However, industrial users who have difficulties obtaining reclaimed water in their area can retrieve and treat wastewater not yet discharged into the sewer system for reuse.

That can also exchange water sources with businesses within the same water supply area.
