Government to develop next generation fighter jets
President Tsai Ing-wen says the government is preparing to develop the island's next generation of indigenous jet fighters.
Tsai says the move is aimed at "ensuring the continuity of her administration's national defence policy."
She made the announcement during an interview with ERA News, where she raised her administration's achievements and highlighted the government's resolve to build Taiwan's autonomy in the area of defence systems.
The outgoing president did not give any details of the plan for the next generation of IDF aircraft but she did stress that the Air Force will be taking delivery of 66 Brave Eagle advanced trainer aircraft by 2026 under the government's "defence autonomy" plan.
She also stressed that "if the plan is interrupted, it will be difficult to resume" - and expressed her hope that the next president will maintain support for the development of Taiwan's defence industry.
