The Hospital and Social Welfare Organizations Administration Commission says employees at all 26 hospitals run by the Ministry of Health and Welfare (MOHW) will receive a 4% pay rise in January. Nurses at 21 of those hospitals will have received additional pay hikes by the end of this month.

According to the commission, the across-the-board 4% pay hike is aimed at addressing an acute manpower shortage in medical institutions run directly by the health ministry.

Commission officials say the manpower shortage has been aggravated by fierce competition from private hospitals in recent months, as several of them have increased salaries this year.

Figures show the 4% pay rise will benefit 8,026 MOHW nurses and it will raise their monthly salaries by between NT$1,500 and NT$2,500. It will also increase the hospitals' expenses by about NT$140 million per year.
