Typhoon Koinu brings heavy rain
Typhoon Koinu has been churning across Taitung and Pingtung over the past several hours and its eye is now some 10 kilometres southeast of Taiwan's southern tip E-luan-bi. The Central Weather Administration says the storm has slowed down a little but remains strong and continues to move westward at 10 kilometres an hour.
Forecasters say the centre of the typhoon may skirt the Heng-chun Peninsula without actually making landfall, and it's expected to move to the west of Heng-chun around noontime.
They also say winds in Taitung and southern Taiwan should gradually diminish, but rain will continue.
Accumulated rainfall in Kenting has already reached 230 millimetres so far today, and in Taidong's Bei-nan Township, over 130 millimetres.
The CWA has issued a torrential rain warning for Hua-lian, Taitung and Pingtung, and also an extremely heavy rain advisory for the mountainous areas in Yi-lan, New Taipei, Taoyuan, Taichung and Kaohsiung. The strong wind alert also remains in effect for the coastal areas around Taiwan proper and outlying islands.
