The Central Election Commission (CEC) has released a complete list of independent presidential hopefuls who have registered for the petition to become eligible candidates in January's election.

Along with Terry Gou and his running mate Tammy Lai, the list includes 18 other individuals. They include a convicted murderer, Lan Hsin-qi, who is partnering with the head of the Gong He Party, Zhou Ke-qi in the signature drive. Lan served 19 years in prison for a 1981 double homicide.

The list also includes Sovereign State for Formosa and the Pescadores Party Chairman Zheng Zi-tsai, whose running mate is Huang Sheng-feng. Zheng was involved in a conspiracy in 1970 to assassinate late president Chiang Ching-kuo.

All of the independent hopefuls must submit at least 289,667 signatures, or 1.5% of eligible voters in the previous presidential election, from today through 2 November to qualify as candidates. They also must also pay a NT$1 million deposit.

The election commission says results of the petitions will be announced by 14 November.
