The Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC) has reported a 6.4% rise in road deaths from January to June this year, compared to the same period last year. The total number of road accidents also increased, exceeding 200,000.

Most affected were pedestrians and motorcycle riders, while the only decrease was seen in drunk-driving-related deaths.

Transport Minister Wang Kuo-tsai urges a concerted effort from various government departments to improve road safety. Wang says significant efforts are needed in the second half of the year to meet the goal of reducing traffic deaths by 5%.
