Ocean surface temperature reaches record high
07 August, 2023
A major climate modelling service is saying the surface temperature of earth’s oceans has hit its highest ever level as climate change continues to ravage the planet.
Copernicus climate modelling service says global average daily sea surface temperatures hit 20.96 degrees this week. That breaks the previous record, set in 2016.
Scientists from Copernicus say it is likely the record will continue to be broken, as oceans are usually not at their hottest globally until the month of March.
They say high temperatures are likely driven by the El Nino weather phenomenon. However, they add that these weather patterns are probably exacerbated by climate breakdown and the heating atmosphere.
