Ministry of Education minister Pan Wen-chung says the government plans to partner with the private sector to recruit an additional 10,000 international students over four years.

Pan says the move is part of government efforts to ease an on-going labour shortage by funding scholarships and soliciting private-sector financing for international students.

Pan says government agencies are also partnering with the private sector to launch semiconductor studies courses and are in the process of planning international dual degree programs and special two-year programmes for undergraduate students.

This comes after President Tsai Ing-wen pledged to attract 10,000 more international students to study and work in Taiwan by granting them scholarships earlier this week. Tsai said that in order to be eligible for the scholarships, foreign students must agree to work in Taiwan for a certain amount of time after they graduate.
