Transport Minister Wang Kuo-tsai says the TPass regional public transport card has been used for an estimated 414,000 rides since it was launched on 1 July. Wang says some 307,000 TPass cards have been sold islandwide.

Wang says passenger traffic was smooth at Taiwan Railways Administration's contactless turnstiles at the Taipei Main Station on Monday, which the minister says was a huge improvement from the weekend, when people unaware there were designated TPass gates.

The transport minister says it is hoped that all T-R-A turnstiles will be able to scan the new TPass cards by the end of this year.

The three separate regional TPass cards can be used for travel in Keelung, Taipei, New Taipei and Taoyuan in the north; Miaoli, Taichung, Nantou and Changhua in the centre and Tainan, Kaohsiung and Pingtung in the south.

President Tsai Ing-wen says she hopes the new monthly TPass will help to ease the cost of commuting to work and encourage more people to take public transport, in an effort to reduce carbon emissions.
