The office of Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) presidential candidate Lai Ching-te is slamming Kuomintang (KMT) presidential candidate Hou Yu-ih after Hou announced plans to continue using nuclear power.

Hou described the DPP's energy policy as being "completely wrong," and said nuclear power remain a viable option, if "safety and waste are properly handled."

Hou said he believes the third nuclear plant cannot be decommissioned, the life span of the second nuclear plant can be extended, and the first nuclear plant can be restarted after proper evaluation.

However, Lai's election campaign office spokesman Chen Shih-kai dismissed Hou's plans as unrealistic and he pointed out that although the KMT's presidential candidate has repeatedly emphasizing the use of nuclear energy, he has yet to release any comprehensive national energy policy.

Hou was joined at the KMT's campaign conference by former president Ma Ying-jeou, former Taipei mayor Hao Long-bin and KMT Chairman Eric Chu.
