The Environmental Protection Administration says packaging materials used by online retailers will no longer be allowed to contain PVC from 1 July.

The move means the retailers will have to use recycled materials for packaging purposes from that date.

Under the new rules, no PVC plastic will be allowed in packaging, while wrappers containing more than 90-per cent recycled paper in natural colours or plastic packaging with more than 25-per cent reusable plastic will need to be prioritised. Rules will also be introduced regarding how much packaging can be used and they will differ depending on the size of online retailer's paid-in capital. Some 2% of the packaging materials used in products sold in 2024 must be reusable and that ratio will increase to 8.5% by 2025 and 15% by 2026.

Retailers failing to comply with the new rules will face a maximum fine of NT$150,000 and be required to change their packaging within a given timeframe.
