The Ministry of Finance (MOF) says the average national debt shouldered by each citizen has dropped to its lowest level in the last three months.

The ministry said the national debt per person stood at about NT$260,000 on 17 June and that was the same level as when statistics were last released on 17 March.

The national debt per person peaked at NT$272,000 on 14 April and remained unchanged for over a month before falling to the current level.

Finance Minister Zhuang Cui-yun says the decline comes as individuals and businesses filed their annual income tax in May, which enabled the ministry to repay a debt of NT$111 billion in June.

Zhuang took office in late January, and previously said one of her focal points would be strengthening the country's financial resiliency. However, she says the government will now launch a comprehensive review before it decides whether or not to continue paying down debt during the second half of the year.
