National Taiwan University has passed new rules to strengthen the supervision of thesis writing for graduate degrees.

The rules require departments to establish standards for the number of graduate students that each faculty member can teach and the acceptable similarity level of thesis content. School officials say this is a guidance for both professors and students.

Before the local elections in November last year, several politicians were involved in thesis disputes, sparking public discussions.

Being at the centre of the controversy, NTU has been strengthening its mechanisms for ensuring thesis quality. Before submitting their master's or doctoral theses, students now must conduct an originality check and indicate the percentage of similarity in a declaration statement, and the supervising professors have to review it and give consent.

NTU will also offer courses on academic ethics to equip students with ethical attitudes when doing research.
