Taiwan congratulates Paraguayan president elect
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) says Taiwan is resolved to further deepen and cement its relations with Paraguay following the election of Santiago Pena as the South American country's president.
Ambassador to Paraguay Jose Han immediately relayed the congratulatory messages of President Tsai Ing-wen and Vice President Lai Ching-te to Pena, shortly after the candidate of Paraguay's ruling Colorado Party was declared the country's new president-elect in Sunday's presidential race.
The MOFA says that based on the shared values of democracy, freedom and traditional ties between the two sides, Taipei will continue to strengthen bilateral cooperation and exchanges with the new Paraguayan government to create maximum benefits for the people of the two countries.
Pena, who has pledged to maintain Paraguay's six decades of diplomatic relations with Taiwan, grabbed 43% of the votes. That's compared with the 27% won by his centre-left rival Efrain Alegre, who has been in favour of switching allegiance to China.
