Number of Taiwanese working in China declining
A government survey has found that the number of Taiwanese nationals working in China fell for the eighth consecutive year in 2021.
Data shows that 163,000 Taiwanese worked in China in 2021. That figure accounted for 51.1 percent of the 319,000 Taiwanese who worked overseas that year and represented both a decline of 19.2% from 2019 and a drop of 61.6% from 2011.
According to National Central University economics professor Qiu Jun-rong, many Taiwanese businesspeople originally based in China relocated to Vietnam, Thailand or Taiwan due to the US-China trade war since 2018.
The government considers Taiwan nationals to be working overseas if they stay out of the country for a total of 90 days in one year, with reference to domestic labour and health insurance records.
