The cabinet has approved an amendment to the Development of the Cultural and Creative Industries Act as part of government efforts to crackdown on ticket scalpers.

The amendment allows courts to sentence people found guilty of ticket scalping to up to three years in prison and/or a fine of up to NT$3 million.

Under the proposed rules, those caught reselling tickets for cultural events above face value or a defined reselling price could face penalties ranging from 10 to 50 times the original price of each ticket they attempt to sell.

The amendment also stipulates that local governments can enlist the help of police to investigate scalping rings.

The amendment comes after tickets for concerts by Korean group Blackpink in Kaohsiung sold out within one minute but began appearing for resale for as much as NT$400,000.
