Two desalination plants to open this month
The Water Resources Agency says two desalination plants are expected to begin operations later this month.
One of the plants is located in Hsinchu City and is scheduled to begin trial operations later this month. It will provide 9,000 tons of water per day to the city by the end of the month while construction of the other plant in Kaohsiung is almost complete and is also likely to begin trial operations by the end of this month.
The opening of the plants comes as parts of the country are continuing to see drought conditions. The agency has recently raised the water conservation alerts for Tainan and Kaohsiung from "yellow" to "orange" - meaning industrial users and non-industrial heavy users are seeing a reduction in the amount of water supplied to them.
A "yellow" alert is now in effect in both Chiayi city and county – meaning water pressure during off-peak hours will be reduced while "green" alerts have been issued for Hsinchu, Miaoli, Taichung Changhua County.
