The Ministry of Economic Affairs says fixed investment in Taiwan surpassed the NT$6 trillion mark for the first time in 2022 - after increasing by more than 6% from a year earlier.

According to the ministry, the increase came as semiconductor suppliers were keen to expand production and upgrade technologies and companies rushed to invest in 5G applications.

The ministry says the rise in fixed investments also reflected moves by local investors who have operations overseas to invest in Taiwan amid escalating tensions between the United States and China.

Data compiled by MOEA's Department of Statistics showed the country's fixed investments, referring to the accumulation of physical assets such as machinery, land, buildings, installations, vehicles, or technologies, totalled NT$6.27 trillion in 2022, up 6.2% from a year earlier after being adjusted for inflation. Fixed investments last year accounted for 27.6% of Taiwan's GDP - up from 26.1% in 2021.
