TSMC considering fab in Europe
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company says it was still studying the feasibility of setting up a fab in Europe in response to a media report which said the company will build a plant in Dresden, Germany.
In a statement, TSMC reiterated its European investment plan remained under consideration. It issued the statement after the Commercial Times reported earlier on Monday that the chipmaker has chosen Dresden, the semiconductor hub of Germany, as the location to construct a fab with production scheduled to start in 2025.
The report said the investment in Germany aims to meet strong demand for TSMC's specialty processes from Europe and to assuage the impact resulting from geopolitics.
Last week, TSMC said the company sets up operations by taking into account clients' needs and governments' support, while considering a fab in Germany to develop chips used in automotive electronics as well as specialty processes.
TSMC added it was also considering the possibility of setting up a second fab in Japan.
