CECC could downgrade Covid-19 classification in May
Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) head Victor Wang has announced tentative plans to downgrade the current status of Covid-19 and officially disband the centre in May.
Covid-19 is currently listed as a category 5 communicable disease under the Communicable Disease Control Act. A category 5 virus calls for the "formulation of preventive and control measures or preparedness plans," including the establishment of the epidemic command centre.
Wang says the government may take steps to ease epidemic protocols after observing a steady decline in the number of domestic cases since the 228 long weekend holiday.
The CECC head says along with lifting the face mask mandate in schools from Monday, other protocols could be relaxed in three phases starting next week.
The first step will be to relax the protocols for community epidemic prevention work, the second involves easing regulations in medical facilities, while the third will be the downgrading COVID-19 coronavirus from a category 5 communicable disease.
The World Health Organization is slated to hold discussions in April to decide whether to declassify the pandemic as a public health emergency of international concern.
