Four DPP lawmakers are urging the cabinet to establish an agency specifically dedicated to the protection of personal data. The call comes after the database of popular vehicle rental and sharing services platform iRent was found to be unprotected and accessible by anyone who knew the IP address.

According to lawmakers Lai Pin-yu, Liu Shih-fang, Hong Shen-han and Zhuang Jing-cheng, the Cabinet must take steps to address such issues by setting up an agency to be responsible for personal data protection.

Lai says the problem exists because the responsibilities related to the Personal Data Protection Act are divided between numerous government agencies, with 20 second-tier agencies alone supervising non-public organizations while Liu says the government's often sluggish response to personal data leakages and the lack of effective laws needed to be rectified.

The same four lawmakers earlier this year also criticized the government and the Ministry of Digital Affairs for what they described as the "lax response to data breaches at government agencies and state-run enterprises."
