Ministry of National Defense (MND) officials say discharged female military personnel will soon be allowed to enrol in the dual-track reservist training system.

According to Major-General Yu Wen-cheng, the upcoming voluntary training programme will be open to some 500 male and around 200 female reservists.

The voluntary program will be launched in the second quarter of this year.

It will be the first time the military will include discharged female military personnel in its reservist training programme.

The military has long said that it only trained male reservists because it did not have sufficient training capacity to accommodate both males and females.

However, reservists have argued for decades that the failure to include discharged female military personnel in the program was a form of gender discrimination.

Figures show that as of the end of 2021, 8,915 women were listed as reservists, while 15% of the total 180,000 active service military personnel are women.
