The DPP legislative caucus has proposed to amend the Election and Recall Act in an effort to distance itself from allegations of corruption and underworld politics.

Premier Su Zhen-chang says today that the draft bill will add clauses that impose more limits on the people seeking public offices.

Su says the Justice Ministry and the Interior Ministry should present the draft to the cabinet meeting a week from today to be discussed.

Acting Interior Minister Hua Jing-qun has said that those who have been convicted of violating the Narcotics Hazard Prevention Act, the Controlling Guns, Ammunition and Knives Act and the Money Laundering Act should be excluded from joining elections for public positions.

The DPP itself and some experts have said that part of the reasons for its defeat in the local elections was the party's complicated relations with gangs.
