MAC criticises Xi's claims at G20 meeting
The Mainland Affairs Council is calling China's claims regarding Taiwan's sovereignty as factually incorrect.
The comments were made by Chinese leader Xi Jinping during a meeting with US President Joe Biden. The council said Taiwan is a "sovereign country" and is neither part of China nor China's internal affairs.
The statement was issued as a response to comments by China's Foreign Ministry, which said Xi told Biden that "the Taiwan question is at the very core of China's core interests" and "a matter for the Chinese and China's internal affairs."
The Mainland Affairs Council says Taiwan's "commitments" are the core of the country's interests and Xi's claims lack any legal basis and run counter to the will and hopes of the people of Taiwan. The council said neither the Taiwan's peoplenor the international community will accept any attempt by China to force its political framework on Taiwan or create tensions in the Taiwan Strait.
