MAC slams latest "re-unification" offer
The Mainland Affairs Council is dismissing Beijing's latest proposals for peaceful reunification - saying Taiwan will never allow China to "meddle" in its future.
The statement comes after China's Taiwan Affairs Office said Beijing was willing to make the utmost effort to strive for a peaceful "reunification" with the island.
According to office spokesperson Ma Xiao-guang, China was willing to make the greatest efforts to achieve peaceful "reunification" and those efforts include Taiwan having a "social system different from the mainland."
Ma said that will ensure that Beijing will respect the people's ways of life, including religious freedoms.
However, Ma went on to saythat the offer was "under the precondition of ensuring national sovereignty, security, and development interests."
The Mainland Affairs Council says China persists in using "illegal military exercises and legal and economic retaliation in its attempt to coerce Taiwan's people," and such behaviour is "abominable."
