Members of the European Parliament are calling on the European Union to strengthen its relations with Taiwan in a resolution that passed with 424 votes in favour, and 14 against, with 46 abstentions.

The move comes a day after the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee passed its Taiwan Policy Act in a bipartisan vote.

In the resolution adopted on Thursday, European Parliament members denounced China's live fire drills in the Taiwan Strait which took place in August after Nancy Pelosi's trip here.

They also demanded that the Chinese government refrain from any measures which could destabilise both the Taiwan Strait and regional security.

The European Parliament also welcomed Lithuania's plans to open a trade office in Taiwan, and the MP's called on EU countries who have not done the same to follow Lithuania's example.

Even as they reiterated their "one China" policy, the European Parliament stressed the status quo should not be changed unilaterally, that the people of Taiwan could decide how they want to live, and that they were opposed to the use of threat or force.
