No new timetable for internet content bill
The National Communications Commission (NCC) says there is currently "no timeline" for reintroducing a draft bill to regulate the content of online platforms.
Commission spokesman Wong Bo-cong says his office is now "back to square one" after a public outcry over the bill's original proposal and he says the commission will now review and further research some of the controversies.
Wong says the NCC will also put more focus on platform accountability and user protection, among the other issues, going forward.
The statements come after the commission was slammed for introducing the draft bill last month during a series of public hearings.
That resulted in Premier Su Tseng-Chang weighing in on the issue - saying that "public consultations in all quarters" are needed before the bill can move forward.
Service providers, civil groups and lawmakers have expressed their concerns that the draft bill could be used to infringe on freedom of expression, undermine user privacy and impede the internet industry.
