Government congratulates new UK PM
The government has sent its congratulations to Liz Truss on becoming the UK's new prime minister. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Taiwan's representative office in London sent the congratulatory message from President Tsai Ing-wen to Truss, expressing the warmest congratulations of the government and people of Taiwan.
The congratulatory message also expressed Tsai's hopes that bilateral relations will continue to deepen under Truss' leadership.
The foreign ministry says it believes relations between the two sides will continue to grow with Truss as prime minister as she expressed her support for Taiwan on several occasions during her tenure as the UK's foreign secretary.
The ministry also says bilateral relations have improved rapidly in recent years while the British government has also repeatedly expressed its concern over cross-strait tensions while calling for the peaceful resolution of related issues.
