Officials say the first batch of the Novavax vaccine is set to arrive in Taiwan at the end of the month. The Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) says 500-thousand doses of the protein subunit vaccine should land in the coming days, and may be available for useas soon as 14 July.

The CECC says the vaccines are part of two million Novavax shots distributed to Taiwan by the World Health Organization's COVAX programme. The center says the Novavax vaccine is manufactured using fragments of spike antigens, and is less likely to cause adverse reactions compared with mRNA vaccines.CECC Deputy Director-General Zhuang Ren-xiang says Novavax may be an option for those who are still hesitant to get vaccinated.

This comes as the CECC reported 44,428 new coronavirus cases on Tuesday. Of that number, 49 were imported infections.Health officials say 110 previously reported cases have now been listed as severe, while 87 other cases have developed moderate symptoms.

Figures show that of the just over 3.6 million domestic cases reported here in Taiwan this year, 0.18-per cent have been classified as severe infections, while 0.24-per cent of the total cases have been classified as moderate. The vast majority of infected individuals were either asymptomatic or had mild symptoms.

103 new deaths were also reported. The deceased ranged in age from their 30s to their 90s. They included 97 individuals who had chronic illnesses or other severe diseases, and 36 who were unvaccinated. That brings the number of coronavirus-related deaths since the pandemic began here in Taiwan to 6,448.
