Lawmakers across party lines have voted to lower the voting age in Taiwan to 18 from 20, sending the issue to a national referendum later this year.

The proposed bill for a constitutional amendment was put to a vote on the legislative floor earlier today.

The final vote was 109-0, and the votes in favour of the amendment surpassed the minimum 82 votes required for the bill to clear the legislature.

Today’s result was a victory for student and civil society groups which have spent years trying to bring Taiwan's voting age in line with most other democratic countries.
