Taipower exploring budget solutions
Environment Vice Minister Lien Ching-chang (連錦漳) says Taipower is exploring solutions to address its budget shortfall, including asset restructuring, as the company faces limits on raising debt or electricity rates.
The KMT legislative caucus announced plans to withhold Taipower's NT$200 billion supplementary budget for 2023 and 2024, criticizing its energy policies.
KMT leaders argue that Taipower's reliance on government funds is unsustainable without significant policy reforms. Taipower defended its efforts to maintain Taiwan's relatively low electricity rates, noting it spent NT$80 billion annually between 2022 and 2024 to stabilize prices while other countries saw sharp increases. Taipower denied rumours of a 7% rate hike but warned of continued financial strain.
The KMT indicates it may partially approve the budget if Taipower provides clearer details on its energy strategy. Both sides remain at odds over the company's green energy investments.
