The Workforce Development Agency under the Ministry of Labor (MOL) says migrant workers close to reaching the maximum 12 or 14-year stay in Taiwan can now have their employers apply for a one-year work permit extension on their behalf.

The extension is available to migrant workers employed in the production sector, who are currently limited to working for a maximum of 12 years in Taiwan, and also to private home-based migrant caregivers, who can currently work in Taiwan for a maximum of 14 years. Applications can only be made 30 days before or after the expiration of the existing employment permit.

According to the agency, the move is designed to reduce the risk of cross-border movement due to the coronavirus pandemic and to save resources related to quarantine and testing. However, the Workforce Development Agency says the policy may be adjusted due to pandemic-related developments.
