Vice President William Lai will serve as President Tsai Ing-wen's envoy to attend the inauguration ceremony of Honduran President-elect Xiomara Castro later this month.

It will be the first time Lai travels overseas since taking office in May 2020.

The Presidential Office has announced that Lai will lead a delegation of 26 people that will depart Taipei on 25 January and arrive in Honduras on 27 January.

The delegation will depart a day later to head home and arrive back in Taiwanon 30 January.

Local media report that the delegation is likely to make a stopover in Los Angeles, but the presidential office has yet to confirm it.

Members of the delegation will include Taiwan's representative to the US, Hsiao Bi-khim, and pandemic prevention experts.

The office gave no indication of why Lai rather than President Tsai herself is attending the ceremony.

Lai could potentially face an issue if the stopover is in the US because American authorities require visitors to be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 with an approved vaccine.

Lai was vaccinated with the Taiwan-made Medigen vaccine.
