Today marks the International Women's Day, and new amendments to the Gender Equality in Employment Act will take effect.

Those amendments aim to offer better protection for women and men in the workplace where they experience sexual harassment. The law stipulates that victims can directly report to local government agencies, which are obligated to investigate, so that the cases don't get downplayed or covered up within their own organizations.

It also says that employers who hire over 30 employees must establish measures for preventing sexual harassment, and regulations for complaints and disciplinary actions.

When a victim files a complaint, the employer must prevent further harassment, conduct an investigation, and take appropriate disciplinary or corrective actions against the perpetrator. Employers failing to do so can face fines of up to NT$1 million.

Employers also need to provide victims or refer them to counselling, medical or psychological consultations, social welfare and legal resources, and other necessary services.
