April retail sales rise 7.5%, export orders fall

Retail trade sales in Taiwan registered NT$369.7 billion in April 2023, an increase of 7.5% from the same month in 2022. According to a report from the Ministry of Economic Affairs, sales of food and beverage services were NT$81.5 billion in April 2023, an increase of 31.4% year-on-year. In addition, sales of food services by restaurants and beverage shops also rose by 31.4% in the same period.
However, sales of wholesale trade were NT$903.8 billion in April 2023, a decrease of 15.1% compared with the same month in 2022, according to the MOEA.
In other news from the MOEA, the ministry reported that export orders were US$42.5 billion in April 2023 a decrease of 18.1% compared with the same month in 2022. In NT dollar terms, the export orders were NT$1,298.9 billion, a decrease of 14.1% on a year-on-year basis. It was the eighth consecutive month of annual export declines, driven by a drop in orders for electronic components, although sharp falls were also seen in orders for plastics/rubber, chemical and metal products. Year to date, export orders are down 20.6%, according to the MOEA.
