More direct flight routes to China reinstated
The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) says direct air routes between Taiwan and 10 Chinese cities will be reinstated from today, while 13 other Chinese cities have been selected for cross-strait charter flights.
Flight routes include those between Taoyuan, Taipei and Kaohsiung, and the Chinese cities of Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Nanjing, Hangzhou, Qingdao, and Wuhan.
Cities to soon be opened to charter flights from Taiwan included Shenyang, Changsha, Xi'an, Nanchang, Tianjin, and Xuzhou.
Officials say details on how the charter flights will operate will be announced at a later date.
MAC deputy minister Zhan Zhi-hong says the resumption of flights follows a comprehensive evaluation of the risks, airline operating capacity, and the amount of business and travel that traditionally took place between the cities.
The deputy minister says it's hoped that the resumption of links between the two sides will help to promote "healthy and organized" exchanges across the Taiwan Strait.
