US approves new arms package for Taiwan
Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense (MND) says the Biden administration has informed Taiwan of the approval of a US$619 million arms package for F-16 fighter jet equipment and munitions.
The MND, the US Department of State notified the US congress that it has approved the package and the arms sale is expected to be passed in a vote in congress within about a month.
The package includes high-speed anti-radiation missiles, training missiles, advanced medium-range air-to-air missiles as well as guidance systems and multi-purpose launchers.
It also includes integration and test support and equipment, and other related elements of logistical and program support.
Defence officials say the procurement of the missile systems is aimed at boosting "certain aspects" of Taiwan's defence capabilities and building a stockpile of weaponry in the face of the growing threat from China.
