NPA touts organised crime crackdown
The National Police Agency (NPA) is touting the success of a recent crackdown on organized crime gangs - saying more 1,200 suspects have been detained.
Its directorate-general Huang Ming-chao says law enforcement agencies from across Taiwan have been targeting gangs with known involvement with kidnappings and extortion over the past week.
Huang says the crackdown has resulted in the arrest of 1,254 suspects believed to have been involved in 683 cases. The investigations have also seen over NT$700 million in illegal cash and property assets being frozen.
The NPA says of the suspects detained, nearly 50 have known connections to organized crime gangs. The statements come as the Ministry of Justice has been promoting a series ofcrackdowns to curb vote buying, violence, and illegal foreign campaign contributions ahead of this month’s local elections.
