UK trade minister in Taiwan
The UK's trade policy minister is in Taiwan to co-host the 25th edition of UK-Taiwan Trade Talks in Taipei.
Greg Hands used social media to announce his arrival, saying it was exciting that his first foreign visit since rejoining the UK's trade office was to Taiwan" and "it was good to check out Taipei's temples and night markets – as he did when he first came to Taiwan in 1991."
Hands will be meeting with senior government officials during his visit, including President Tsai Ing-wen, Taiwan's top trade negotiator John Deng Economics Minister Wang Mei-hua, Minister of Digital Affairs Audrey Tang and National Development Council Minister Kung Ming-hsin.
These meetings will be the first, in-person, government-level, UK-Taiwan talks to take place since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Hands says boosting trade with Taiwan is part of the UK's post-Brexit tilt towards the Indo-Pacific, and he expects closer collaboration will help both countries future-proof their economy for decades to come.
