The Taoyuan Metro is set to cut service, due to declining ridership. The company announced that, starting from 28 May, it will halt express trains outside peak hours, which means there will be no express trains from 9 AM to 5 PM, and after 7 PM, every day. Currently Taoyuan Metro operates two express trains every hour, during off-peak times.

The company says between 1 May 19 May, the system transported an average of 34,575 people a day. While that's 13% more, compared with the same time last year, ridership hasdropped dramatically over the weekend.

In its report to the Taoyuan City Council two weeks ago, the Metro company admitted that it had recorded NT$3 billion in financial losses, more than its registered capital.
